About the work
In “Midday Stars,” Emmanuel Dudu uses round figures in abstracted form that converge, and diverge, from a concentrated point. These figures could represent various things, including: humans under a microscopic lens, the sky above us, or cellular life in all its intricacies. One thing remains clear however, and that is that “Midday Stars” depicts a dance. A dance of various things, beings, figures, all within the same environment and looking to thrive; much like human interaction.
Dudu is a strong exponent of consistency and resilience who believes that any successful artist must first and foremost be built for endurance. This attitude to artistry has defined a long-lasting and successful career and translated to his works.
About the Artist
Dudu Emmanuel (born 1974) is an artist driven by a resilient approach to virtuosity in visual art. Born into a post-civil war Nigeria, Dudu has experienced the persistent instability of the country’s political landscape, perhaps more so than many others. Yet, he has refused to let these tumultuous conditions define his work, holding firm to the belief that an artist is more than the circumstances of their birth.
Dudu is a vocal advocate of what he terms the “cross-pollination” of ideas. He believes that rigidly adhering to traditional beliefs or regional ways of life can stifle an artist’s ability to fully explore their creative potential. This philosophy of openness is evident in his art, which tackles a myriad of topics, resisting categorization or confinement to a single theme.
One of Dudu’s notable works, Midday Stars, exemplifies this diversity. In the painting, abstract round figures converge and diverge from a central point. These forms evoke a variety of interpretations: humans viewed under a microscope, the vast sky above, or the intricate beauty of cellular life. Regardless of interpretation, one thing remains clear—Midday Stars is a dance. A dance of beings, figures, and entities coexisting in the same environment, striving to thrive; much like human interaction itself.
Dudu Emmanuel is a staunch proponent of consistency and resilience. He believes that an artist’s success hinges not only on talent but also on their endurance and perseverance. This steadfast attitude has defined his enduring career and is deeply reflected in his art, which continues to inspire and captivate audiences
