About the Artist

Norbert Okpu (born 1974) is a surrealist Nigerian artist based in Lagos, Nigeria. His artistic vision is deeply rooted in the subcultural values of Nigeria, aiming to educate and inspire meaningful contributions to society. Drawing inspiration from Salvador Dalí and Pablo Picasso, Okpu’s style is a captivating fusion of surrealist and cubist elements, creating a unique and mesmerizing aesthetic.

Okpu employs an extensive array of mediums—sawdust, wood, dried leaves, calabash, plastic, fabrics, and acrylic paint—to craft his signature style. His works explore profound themes such as body autonomy, love, nationalism, and unity, weaving together his experiences and learned techniques to evoke powerful messages.

In his celebrated painting, Body and Soul, Okpu presents a haunting yet beautiful depiction of the interplay between the human body and the errant nature of the soul. Human figures swirl and intertwine with others in a yellow essence that symbolizes our shared experiences despite individual differences. This work is a surrealist exploration of the human condition, illustrating how the boundaries of our physical forms separate us, yet our souls remain interconnected.

Another masterpiece, Melodies of Love that Burns Within, demonstrates Okpu’s experimental approach. The painting portrays a male figure composed of miniature human forms, harmoniously dancing to the music created by the figure’s saxophone. This work delves into the invisible threads connecting us to everyone we encounter, portraying humans as an amalgamation of experiences and desires. The prominent figure, crowned with flowers and gazing at the sunset with quiet contentment, emphasizes the divine and transformative power of love—a force that transcends time and space and inspires creation.

Norbert Okpu’s work aligns with the growing diversity of contemporary African art, cementing his place as a renowned artist whose evocative creations resonate with audiences worldwide.
