About the Artist
Sam Ebohon is a studio artist born November 30, 1970, in Lagos to Edo-Benin parents. He graduated in 1990 with an HND (Higher National Diploma) from the prestigious Yaba College of Technology.
His most identifiable works can best be characterized by criss-cross linear strokes which tend to abstract his paintings. Sam Ebohon's vibrant brushstrokes bear a particular textual flourish that characterizes artworks by graduates of the Yaba School.
Sam's exploration of kinetic brushwork creates a blurry effect that veils but also reveals beauty and elegance while pointing towards a contemporary African concept of the sublime. The compact straight dashes and short strokes of his paintings resolve into naturalistic forms that seek to define human existence in various thematic and social context. By creating a balance between technique and visual drama, these artworks evoke interesting visual effects through their use of seemingly out-of-focus imagery. As if seen through a glass prism, the images expand into reflections of motion.
In 2009 Sam was awarded the Gold Medal Prize at the Caterina de Medici painting competition in Florence Italy. His paintings are widely represented in local and international art collections.
