About the work
“Behind the Scene,” George exemplifies his diverse style. Paying homage to cubist and modernist principles, George depicts the figure of a woman turning away from the audience of the painting, while holding onto a red robe. George asks us to consider the potentially fragile nature of this woman’s emotional state of mind through the unwillingness to cover her body with the robe. However, this resistance to clothing could prove to be a resistance in of itself: a woman with nothing to lose. “Behind the Scene,” above all else, shows a pristine appreciation for the woman’s form.
In a decades-long career, George has shown a perpetuity in self-improvement and evolution.
About the Artist
Wande George is a pioneering Nigerian artist whose unconventional style has become synonymous with contemporary African art. A 1987 graduate of Auchi Polytechnic, where he earned an HND in Painting and General Arts, George began his creative journey with a successful career in design and advertising. Later, he joined the Guild of Professional Fine Artists in Nigeria, further solidifying his reputation as a leading figure in the African art scene.
George’s paintings are distinguished by slender figures that stand out with their striking design and color, creating a vivid contrast against their surroundings. His versatility is perhaps his most defining trait, as he draws inspiration from influential 20th-century European art movements such as cubism, expressionism, and figurative art. This eclectic blend lends his work a unique abstract quality that bridges cultural and artistic traditions.
In his painting The Awakening, George showcases one of his signature slender figures, painted entirely in white. The figure, positioned at the center of the composition, stands motionless amidst other slender figures rendered in colors harmonizing with their environment. While these surrounding figures face outward, the central figure confronts the audience directly. Through this striking contrast, George explores themes of awareness and self-discovery. Using vibrant colors, he suggests that even within the absurdity of existence, there lies a purpose in breaking free from ignorance and embracing truth. The Awakening is a deeply human piece, urging self-reflection and a rejection of living life on autopilot.
Another of George’s works, Behind the Scene, exemplifies his stylistic diversity and his nod to cubist and modernist principles. The painting portrays a woman turning away from the audience while clutching a red robe. This nuanced composition invites viewers to consider the woman’s emotional state. Her resistance to donning the robe may symbolize vulnerability or defiance—an act of independence and resilience. Through Behind the Scene, George celebrates the female form with elegance and depth, leaving room for interpretation and connection.
Throughout his decades-long career, Wande George has demonstrated a relentless commitment to self-improvement and artistic evolution. His works continue to captivate audiences, merging technical brilliance with profound explorations of the human experience.
